The Rhythm of Seasons and Faith
By establishing the connection between the cosmic, liturgical and Gregorian calendars, it was possible to emphasize the deeply structuring role of religion on the rhythm of life of the inhabitants of New France. For example, births, baptisms and marriages were arranged according to the rhythm of the liturgical calendar. Very few marriages were celebrated during Advent and Lent, as a direct consequence of the Church strictly forbidding marriage during those periods. Similarly, a decline of births observed during the months of June and July could correspond to a decline of conceptions during Advent.
