Espèce disparue, le grand Pingouin avait pour habitats les escarpements rocheux d’îles de l’Atlantique Nord : les Orcades, les Féréo, l’Islande et Terre-Neuve. Incapable de voler, il était obligé de nicher dans ses îles où les prédateurs terrestres étaient absents. Toutefois, les marins ont commencé à le chasser abondamment pour sa chair, sa graisse et ses plumes, de sorte que les deux derniers grands Pingouins furent capturés en Islande, en 1844. Le grand Pingouin avait une longueur de 70 à 75 cm et une envergure qui ne dépassait rarement les 30 cm.

An extinct species, the Great Auk’s habitats were the rocky escarpments of North Atlantic islands: the Orcades, the Fereo Islands, Iceland and Newfoundland. Unable to fly, it was forced to nest in its islands from where earth-based predators were absent. However, seamen began to hunt it intensively for its meat, its fat and its feathers, with the result that the two last surviving Great Auks were captured in Iceland in 1844. The length of the Great Auk was 70 to 75 cm, with a wingspan that rarely exceeded 30 cm.
