Between 1896 and 1930, industrial capitalism transformed Québec's economy as it did elsewhere in North America and Europe. Industrial activity rose to the fore while farming declined. To carve out a share of the market, significant capital was needed to invest or find a market niche to exploit. Some French Canadian businesspeople did just that toward the end of the 19th century by starting factories and other ventures.
