Louis XIII decided to reform the French monetary system in 1640. Thus emerged the Louis d'or (gold Louis), the Louis d'argent (silver Louis), and, starting in 1656, the copper coin known as the liard. This “silver Louis” bears the effigy of Louis XV, King of France, and has the following Latin inscription on the back: LVD XV D.G. FR. ET NAV. REX, which means “Louis XV, King of France and Navarre by the grace of God.”
