Mercantilism

Mercantilism is an economic theory by which a state's power is based on the amount of precious metal it possesses. To accumulate gold and silver, the country had to export more goods than it imported, extract precious metals from its mines, or, as was the case in the era of South American colonization, bring back gold from its colonies. Mercantilism was very popular in France at the time of New France.
