In 1893 a young pharmacist from North Carolina, U.S.A., began concoting various types of “soft drinks,” which he had his friends at the pharmacy sample. In 1898 one of his recipes was baptized Pepsi-Cola and registered as a trademark in 1903. Pepsi-Cola and Coca-Cola, two great rivals, have been at loggerheads ever since.

Mostly used in pastrymaking, lard is made from melted pork grease. This Legrade Brand 5 lb (2.26 kg) pail of lard was “packaged for Coopérative Fédérée de Québec,” which was founded in 1922. The coop today comprises around 100 affiliated coops belonging to 51,000 members.

With the arrival of the 20th century, French Canadian success stories became increasingly common. Despite the domination of the Anglo-Saxon bourgeoisie, Québec entrepreneurs succeeded in business and created companies that grew into large corporations.
