Three Centuries of Dependency

Since the early days of colonization, French Canadians were economically dependent. Peasants were dependent on their seigneur, to whom they had numerous obligations under the seigneurial regime that hindered their economic emancipation. Then workers were dependent on their employers, working under difficult conditions in factories in exchange for meager and uncertain wages.
