Use of coal as domestic heating fuel became widespread across Québec in the 19th century. First used in specially designed fireplaces, coal became accessible to the working class with the introduction in the 1840s—and particularly in the following decade—of coal stoves. According to Marius Barbeau, Henri Bernier's foundry in Lotbinière manufactured similar stoves, called “turtles” or Québec City stoves.
