Dome top boxes, which were very common in the mid to late 18th century, were often made of wood covered in leather or sealskin. They were usually studded and equipped with a lock. People used them to store important papers and valuables such as silver, gold, and silverware. This dome top box bears the label of manufacturer Bailey, a saddle, harness, and trunk specialist.
