Raccoon, wolf, fox, beaver
The fur trade emerged with European's very first trips to the new world. Europeans wanted pelts, and the aboriginal peoples wanted manufactured products. As trade intensified in the 17th century, fur became New France's top resource. Although impressive, profits from the fur trade were nonetheless not sufficient in and of themselves to bankroll settlement efforts.
