Kerosene was discovered midway through the 19th century by Dr. Abraham Gesner from Nova Scotia. Obtained from coal or oil, it is also known as ‘coal' or ‘lamp' oil. In Canada it seems to have come into use as a home heating fuel relatively late: the first patent granted to a Canadian stove manufacturer for coal oil only goes back to 1864. The Central Oil and Gas Stove Company, which made this stove, was based in Massachusetts in the United States.
