Born into a modest farming family in Saint-Pierre on île d'Orléans, François Leclerc stood out for his entrepreneurial spirit. In 1892 at the age of 17, he found a job as a salesman in a Québec City grocery store. Seven years later, he was foreman at Biscuiterie Charest de Québec.
