Jute
Whereas meat and most fruit and vegetables were stored in the cellar where the cool conditions helped preserve them, grain harvested in the fall was stored in the granary to stop it from rotting from the humidity. Ground grain provided households with enough flour to not only make bread—a staple—but also cakes and pies.
