Square Piano

Square Piano

Circa 1860
Varnished wood, ivory, iron
H. 98 cm
W. 1.91 m
Very much in vogue in the English-speaking world, square pianos were abandoned in the 20th century in favor of upright pianos. This neorococo-style piano bears the mark of manufacturer Schuetze & Ludolff of New York City. Pianos were extremely popular in the Victorian era as they evoked both wealth and education. Those who couldn't afford one of their own could even hire one!
