Traditional French Canadian homes were often equipped with root cellars dug into the ground or built nearby. The cellar's cool temperature made it ideal for storing vegetables, fruit, preserves, and meats, and allowed inhabitants to make sure they had enough to eat during winter. At Manoir Mauvide-Genest, the staircase that leads to the cellar was also used for storage.
