Tilt Top table

Circa 1850
Various varnished woods
H. 1.02 m
W. 79.5 cm
The top of this small neorococo-style table can be folded away when it is not in use. When stored in the upright position, the top—which is decorated with animal scenes in wood inlay made up of precious woods arranged in patterns on a veneered surface—becomes the side of the table. These small tables tended to be used to serve tea, an English custom highly regarded by the Victorian (1837–1901) middle and upper class.
