How many beaver pelts to buy a rifle? What's castor gras? Who were the merchants of Place-Royale? What did the colony import from Morocco, Syria, and Germany? You'll find answers to these questions and many more at this exhibit.

Retrace the rapid expansion of Place-Royale, the narrow but strategic strip of land sandwiched between Cape Diamond and the St. Lawrence River. With its port and military facilities and its farmer’s markets, Place-Royale experienced growth, decline, and rebirth over the course of three centuries.

Over the centuries, Place-Royale has played host to natives, early French settlers, British immigrants, Québec City residents and visiting travelers. Explore the many facets of their lives and relive the history of this unique and lively neighborhood.

A Sense of the Past, a permanent exhibition at the Maison Chevalier presents Quebec interiors from the 18th and 19th centuries produced from the Musée de la civilisation’s collections. Admirably well re-created interiors enable visitors to see and understand how people lived in another era.
