On the planet, salt reserves are inexhaustible. The origin of salt is lost in the mists of time and its history is intertwined with that of humanity. It has caused wars, served as money of exchange, was taxed and was at the forefront of the industrial revolution. As time went by salt acquired a symbolic value due in large part to its chemical and physical properties, to which world-wide beliefs and rituals became attached.
Through simple scientific experiments, small-scale models, touchable objects and various games, the Salt Essentials discovery space bids visitors to get acquainted with the thousand and one angles of this unrecognized but fascinating crystal grain. To help guide visitors, the content is offered in seven (7) modules: Salt: origin and chemistry; Salt production; The uses of salt; A Vital Element; Wild animals and salt; Salt in History; Our daily salt.
Salt Essentials is a coproduction of the Musée de la nature et des sciences of Sherbrooke and of the Musée de la civilisation.
