3.2.5 Maintenance Garage and Rest Station

A stitch in time saves nine.

To prevent equipment from breaking down and bringing mine operations to a halt, vehicles and machinery are maintained.

Many operations are computerized, including the maintenance record sheet, cost and availability of parts.

Some vehicles even have continuous monitoring equipment that transmits the data recorded directly to a computer. Just like Formula 1 race cars!

Many different devices are also used to determine what is causing a machine to malfunction.

This establishes whether a failure is due to a manufacturing defect, poor maintenance or improper use.

A garage is set up underground so that mechanics, electricians, welders, plumbers and carpenters can carry out all these operations.
