3.3.2 Mucking

The removal of ore from the stope is called "mucking" (or bogging). It is done using a dumper or a scoop tram.

The scoop tram is a load-haul-dump truck designed especially for underground mines. It is used in relatively narrow drifts to carry large quantities of material.

It can also be operated from a remote control station using levers and video cameras, which means that the operator does not have to venture into dangerous places.

Once loaded, the ore is transported to a 2- to 5-metre-wide ore pass, where it is dumped. The ore falls to the bottom of the mine where it undergoes first-stage crushing before being hauled to the surface.
