2.2.2 Literature Search

You don’t just go blindly looking for minerals! Québec’s territory is vast and thorough preparation is a must.

The prospector starts by consulting all the geological information available on the resource he intends to search for. He studies every aspect of the resource and stakes the area he is going to prospect.

Then he must choose the most appropriate exploration techniques and plan his exploration campaign. Obtaining a claim is usually the first step.

To assist the prospector in his endeavour, Québec has one of the best geoscience databases in the world. And it is now readily accessible to everyone!

The system is called SIGÉOM.

The system can be accessed online (http://www.mrn.gouv.qc.ca/mines/potentiel/potentiel-donnees.jsp) and contains a wealth of geological, geochemical, geophysical, ore deposit, topographic and mining information.

The system also gives the prospector access to a bibliographic database with more than 60,000 documents. Over 4,000 of those were compiled by the Ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec.

Much of the information and literature can be ordered online directly from the SIGÉOM website.
