1.1.5 Fossil Fuels

Materials used as a source of energy.

Coal, petroleum and natural gas all belong to the category of fossil fuels.

In Québec, fossil fuels do not occur in sufficient quantity to warrant their exploitation.

However, fossil fuels are Canada’s most important natural resource, chiefly due to the coal mines, oil sands and oil fields of Alberta.

Gas pipeline under construction. Natural gas is a very abundant fuel in Western Canada. There are an estimated 555 billion cubic feet of extractable reserves, which represents 85 years of exploitation at the current rate of production.
