The Canadian Shield extends from the north shore of the St. Lawrence River to Hudson Strait.
The rocks in the Canadian Shield, at least in Québec, are very old. They are 970 million to 2.85 billion years old and are mainly igneous (basalt, gabbro, granite) and metamorphic (gneiss, schist).
The mineral resources found in the Shield are predominantly metallic minerals such as iron, silver, copper, gold, nickel, niobium and zinc, and industrial minerals such as graphite, dolomite, mica and ilmenite.
