Most of the rocks in the Appalachians are deformed. With a few exceptions, they are 115 to 550 million years old.
They are composed of igneous (granite), metamorphic (slate, schist, serpentine) and, above all, sedimentary (limestone, dolomite, shale, sandstone, conglomerate) rock.
The mineral resources found in the Appalachians consist chiefly of industrial minerals (asbestos, salt, peat).
