Inkwell
Late 19th century
Made in England. Belonged to a student.
School desk inkwell comprising a glass receptacle and a hinged lead cover.

Use
All the students had an inkwell and pen for writing until the mid-20th century. These objects were very valuable. In an essentially rural world, the ability to read and write was reserved for a middle-class, city-dwelling elite.
