                     The Cup in the Canal

The Cup in the Canal
In 1905, after celebrating their victory, the champions returned to Ottawa. When crossing the then frozen Rideau Canal, one of the players, with a mighty kick, sent the Stanley Cup flying into the Canal. The next day, when the Cup was discovered missing, the players rushed to the Canal to recover the snow-covered trophy.

The Cup as Evidence
In 1961, a fan from Montreal, Ken Wilander, was at a playoff game between the Blackhawks and the Canadiens in Chicago. Seeing that his team was about to be eliminated, he rushed into the corridor of Chicago Stadium and smashed the glass case holding the Cup. The next day, he told the judge that he wanted to bring the Cup back to Montreal where it belonged.
