The Cup Goes to Thurso
In 1979, after the fourth consecutive win for the Canadiens, Guy Lafleur could not resist the temptation to make off with the Stanley Cup. While the celebrations were in full swing, the superstar hid the trophy in the trunk of his car and took off for Thurso, his hometown. Many people came to admire the Cup on the front lawn of the family home. When he spotted his son Martin, garden hose in hand, filling the trophy up with water, Lafleur decided to return the Cup to the team. In Montreal, they had been searching feverishly for it for hours. Lafleur, who notched 129 points during the season, got off with a reprimand.

The Cup Takes a Dip
After the Pittsburgh victory in 1992, the players were invited to a party at Mario Lemieux’s place. One of the team members put the trophy on his shoulder, climbed up an embankment, hoisted it up in the air and threw it into the pool. « Luckily, it landed in the water without hitting the cement edge », remarked coach Scotty Bowman, « otherwise it could have been the end of the Stanley Cup! »
