The Animated Films of the NFB

The exhibition plunges the visitor into the heart of the captivating and innovative world of animation filmmakers from the National Film Board of Canada, who have pushed the boundaries of their art form. This is a true celebration, where visitors can meet the filmmakers, see their works and stimulate their creativity in the animation lab.

A Vibrant Tribute to the NFB, Pioneer in the Art of Animation, on the Occasion of its 75th Anniversary

The exhibition offers a journey into the world of animated filmmaking, depicting the early days of animation and the beginnings of the NFB. Through viewing the NFB's most remarkable films, five worlds of creation open up for exploration – social history, musicals, experimental films, comedy and fantasy.

To See: Films and Objects

The exhibition presents over 250 films and film clips and some 150 objects, including:

  • The chair from A Chairy Tale by Norman McLaren and Claude Jutra (1957)
  • A cylindrical zoetrope (1867)
  • Norman McLaren's Oscar from Neighbours (1952)
  • The TV from The Brunswick Affair (1978)
  • Drawings and puppets from If I Was a God (in production)

"Living" Artifacts in a Studio of Creation

Filmmakers will be working live in an exhibition room:

  • Francis Desharnais (late July 2014)
  • Janet Pearlman (late August 2014)
  • Théodore Ushev (late November 2014)
  • Sylvie Trouvé and Dale Hayward (early March 2015)
  • Claude Cloutier (late June 2015)
