Soft Shells

Photographs by Libby Oliver

Libby Oliver's Soft Shells project takes stock of people from all walks of life. This artist from British Columbia uses her subjects' entire wardrobes to sculpt shells around them, creating daunting photographic portraits.

Identity (as expressed through social and cultural markers) is central to Libby Oliver's creative process. The artist indirectly addresses the issues of overconsumption and "fast fashion" by showcasing her subjects literally buried under their wardrobes. Soft Shells also illustrates how clothing is a means of social communication, and her work questions the influence of our consumer choices on our relationships with others.
