Originating some 5,000 years ago, the Mayan civilization is known as one of the world's richest cultural legacies. At the time of its greatest height, between the 3rd and the 8th century CE, it was one of the most advanced cultures in America, its sophistication surpassing the European cultures of the day. The greatness of this golden civilization was unparalleled, especially in science, astronomy, mathematics, agriculture and medicine.

The exhibition reveals the mystery, heritage and resilience of the Maya of Central America, one of the world's most fascinating civilizations. The Maya revered nature and lived according to an advanced social organization. They erected cities in the middle of the forest, built impressive temples, developed ingenious farming methods and dominated the region for centuries. Today, more than six million Maya are preserving their age-old language and culture.

The exhibition itinerary is divided into several areas, each presenting a scenography and atmosphere that reflects the knowledge and emotions of the subjects addressed and the objects on display. Among the exhibition themes are the Maya's tropical natural environment, their beliefs and their modern-day reality.

The collection of 300 artefacts—most of which had never been exhibited outside Guatemala before this exhibition was shown in Spain in 2017—testifies to their fabulous cultural wealth. Interactive stations, large-format video projections and enveloping sound environments round out the visitor experience. This is a journey back in time that you won't want to miss!

Created by MuseumsPartner (Austria), in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Guatemala, the MAYA exhibition is presented at the Musée de la civilisation with the financial support of the Gouvernement du Québec and Ville de Québec under the Cultural Development Agreement, as well as the participation of ICI Québec and Fairmont Le Château Frontenac (official hotel).
