In a spirit of inclusion, accessibility and equity, and to open a dialogue with museumgoers, the Musée de la civilisation is giving voice to those whose lives have taken the path less travelled.

The Sharing Space was created to help the Musée gather information to paint a true and realistic portrait of Québec society in its next permanent exhibition on Québec, scheduled for 2023.

Neighbours from Abroad

After showcasing the realities of people experiencing homelessness, the Musée de la civilisation, in collaboration with the Spira cooperative, is focussing on the experience of immigrants who have lived in Québec City for fewer than 10 years. These men and women talk about their choices, and the pitfalls and challenges they face—their arrival at the airport, the paperwork and seeking professional equivalencies—as well as their learning about a new society and the otherness they encounter here.

The journalist Pascale Guéricolas and the filmmakers Felippe Martin and Clarissa Rebouças, themselves immigrants, who are behind this sensitive and powerful co-creation invite museumgoers to momentarily step into the shoes of these newcomers to Québec City. Will their perceptions of the issue be changed or remain the same after experiencing these sometimes disconcerting life trajectories? What would they like to see in the next permanent exhibition in Québec society? What objects and statements are especially meaningful for them? This is what this evolving project will reveal through the data collected until January 23, 2022.
