Giving without expecting anything in return is surely one of the most beautiful human gestures.
Altruism takes many shapes and sizes and plays out in many ways. Between monetary gifts and organ donations, a whole world unfolds, offering—often quite humbly—to bring relief to our fellow humans. This incursion into philanthropy lifts the veil on altruism by highlighting the ways we can help our neighbours, communities and society—an essential act that brings out the best in people.
This heartfelt exhibition is presented with support from Ameublements Tanguay and with the collaboration of Épisode, the Fondation du Musée de la civilisation and the Azrieli Foundation.
Philanthropic culture is explored through nearly 180 objects from the Musée's collections (many of which are being presented for the very first time) and captivating audiovisual content featuring testimonials from people involved in philanthropy. Continually brought back to the imminently human dimension of giving, exhibition visitors will be invited to reflect on their own relationship to mutual aid, volunteering, material donation (patronage or the gift of goods or artworks), civic engagement and organ or blood donations.
From a social and anthropological perspective, Generosity. From the Heart clarifies our understanding of what motivates us to give. But above all, it helps us weigh the importance of philanthropy in society, across eras and in communities, and ultimately, will make visitors want to join in the culture of generosity.
Generosity. From the Heart is a necessary and touching exhibition that does a world of good.
